Tempio Pausania is a charming town located in the heart of Gallura, Italy, in the northeastern part of Sardinia. The city is known as the “Granite Temple”, famous for its greenery, carnival and cork.
Here is what to see in one of the most interesting cities in Sardinia:
Tempio Pausania is one of the places that recently received the Tourist Club’s Orange Flag, this prestigious recognition due primarily to the beauty of the country and its historical and cultural attractions, which are well preserved and easily accessible to visitors.
The beautiful Tempio Pausania is located in Gallura, on the east coast of Sardinia, just half an hour from the city of Sassari. Tempio Pausania is a city surrounded by greenery, ideal for those who love nature and archaeological excursions. Walking or cycling along fantastic routes, you can get to areas where you can admire the beauty of nature and breathe fresh air.
The historic center of Tempio Pausanias is characterized above all by the gray granite stone that is typical of the area. In the central core of the city are the Cathedral, the Carmine Theatre, the house of Nino di Gallura, which dates back to the Middle Ages, and the Scolopi Monastery, which houses the museum exhibition of Bernardo de Muro, dedicated to the life and career of the famous translator.
Also of great interest is the installation by Renzo Piano, located on Piazza Faber (a square dedicated to Fabrizio de Andre), and the railway station, decorated with beautiful paintings by Giuseppe Biasi.
It is also worth visiting the surroundings of Tempio Pausanias, such as Nuraghe Maiori, an irregular granite structure with one tower, a central corridor and two chambers. Crossing the corridor leads to a staircase leading to the bastion. Inside this evocative place lives a pristine colony of bats that have been building their homes here for many years.
Continuing to visit the surroundings and heading northeast, namely to the territory of Lura, one can find the greatest concentration of dolmens, sacred prehistoric stones. Excursion to Mount Limbara is also exciting and interesting. From its top you can see the sea and even the mountains of Corsica.
At the foot of Mount Limbara, the springs of Rinaju originate, from which water flows, known for its excellent healing properties. As in all of Sardinia, even in Tempio Pausania the craft is thriving, in fact, it is impossible to just go home without a cork souvenir. This city is famous for cork, extracted from a certain type of oak, as well as granite processing.
Among the most beautiful and celebrated events of Tempio Pausania, the carnival stands out, unique in its kind. The event revolves around the puppet figure of King George. They, during the days of the holiday, are revered, and at the end of the holidays they are publicly burned as a punishment for all the evil that it has brought to the city.
Naturally, the puppet represents the established power, often even in the form of a real political figure. More broadly, the bonfire lit at the end of the carnival is a ritual that represents the transition between winter and spring.
