Seattle is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, located at the foot of Mount Rainier Seattle, on the shores of Lake Washington and Elliot Bay. The location has made the city very intense during the last decades.
It is one of the most modern cities in the USA. This is evidenced by the center with modern skyscrapers, an extensive sea and air port, both cargo and passenger, as well as the location of the headquarters of several large companies in the city, including Boeing.
History
As befits the United States, the beginning of the city was, of course, Indian tribes, and the very name of Seattle comes from the word Noah Sealth, that is, the name of the leader of the tribes. In these territories, a trapper settlement was founded in the middle of the 19th century, sometimes also called the “Emerald City”.
The founders of the city are considered to be a group of white pioneers called the Denny Party. With the beginning of development, the timber industry and the transportation of timber were associated. First, sawmills were built, and then the construction of wooden ships began. The city became more and more open to all types of people.
The city has experienced periods of ups and downs, especially during the Klondike gold rush and the rise of the Boeing Company, and downswings, most notably the great fire at the end of the 19th century. In the 70s of the last century, Microsoft information technologies appeared in Seattle, giving impetus to the city.
Attractions
The oldest place in the city is Pioneer Square, an area built of classic red brick houses finished with iron fittings. In some of them, old taverns still function. The area was supposed to be demolished in the 60s, but it was eventually restored and still delights the eye of visitors.
Another interesting site in Seattle is the Pike Place Market – the oldest operating market in the United States. Its origin goes back over 100 years. A fantastic symbol of the past is the “underground city”, formed as a result of the subsidence of houses and raising the level of sidewalks one floor up. As a result, whole chains of cellars were created, in which numerous cafes and restaurants now operate.
This is a very climatic place. Seattle also has two museums worth visiting: the Seattle Art Museum, with a collection of contemporary art, and the Aviation Museum, housed in the famous red barn that is Boeing’s first headquarters.
Modern Seattle
Modernity manifests itself primarily in downtown Seattle, a remnant of the World’s Fair of the 60s of the last century. In memory of this fair, the Space Needle spire was built up to 185 meters in size and topped with a flying saucer. The plate operates a restaurant with a panoramic view of the city. Downtown Seattle is now an important cultural hub, hosting most of the city’s arts events.
Modernity is also a science zone, the Pacific Science Center, that is, a team of five buildings that host exhibitions, scientific experiments, and numerous cafes, and everything here revolves around science fiction themes. The city also has a state of the art Woodland Park Aquarium and Zoo.
